first tapestry finished!

OK, so I've literally just finished my first tapestry assignment for Year 3 ... gawd, the finishing-off bit is SO BORING!! Though I don't know one tapestry artist who hasn't said the same thing, so I'm not alone ;)

Here's the last panel done - it was based on a painting by Bruno Leti called 'Ewaninga Remnants'. The edges went in on the left hand side of this piece - probably because I was concentrating so hard getting the colours right. So, I didn't check the edge, and it just crept in on me! I must have taken the pic at a good angle, because it doesn't seem so bad here ;)

And here's the whole piece:

I just have to do the accompanying write-up, then it can be posted tomorrow. Of course, it's then onto the next assignment ;) I found the embroidery on the bottom panel more difficult than I expected ... but that's the reason for doing samplers - TO LEARN!!

  1. good crisp colour use; your work looks like Kate Derum's without being derivative, pop imagery, well handled.

    1. Thanks Anton, I tried to keep the colours as close to the original paintings as possible! My technique has always been my weak point (design is my strong point) - so I'm gratified that the former is improving ;)

  2. Great work Michelle. When I look at Miro closely I have the feeling that he is in a space ship, it is the sewing that makes it look that way. You have done a great job with the others too. The half passing is great - I must try to do some, get the technique right.
I had a lot of trouble with the sides coming in (still do if I am not absolutely vigilant). My teacher at the time recommended that I put in a bobbin for three or four warps only, it seems to stop me pulling it in. It worked - I just found it a great nuisance to have the extra bobbin. And I had to be careful to weave it so you couldn't see that I had two bobbins going, not get a big fat ridge, if you know what I mean.

    1. Oh, great idea Mary! I might have to try that one to see if it makes a difference ;) Haa, I call the little Miro man 'the alien' - you're right, he *does* look like he's in a spaceship!!
